Hi everyone! How are you?
First of all, I want to apologize for failing to update this devlog for so long. Real life has kept me busy these past two months, and the little time I managed to get, I preferred spending on the game itself. This week I have some extra free time, though, so I thought it was about time I posted.
So, what’s new, you may be wondering? Lots of awesome stuff! Nothing content-related yet, since I’m still coding the core of the game, but I’m slowly implementing more complex systems and menus.
Despite the fact that I can’t work on Monster Embassy as often as I’d like, whenever I do, I pick it up very fast and I advance a lot, so I’m pretty happy with how things are going. At this rate, hopefully I’ll soon be able to start testing the actual gameplay concept, which works fine in my head but is going to need lots of tweaks, I’m sure…
The inventory system is finished! This includes an inventory menu, item icons, item effects, item descriptions and names, food and eating, ways to obtain and lose items, random drops when you destroy an obstacle… The actual options for item effects are pretty limited right now, but I’ll code those on a case by case basis. I still have a very vague idea of the items that’ll be included in the game, since I won’t work on actual content until the core is done.
The custom keybindings menu is (almost) functional! Keyboard keybindings work fine, as far as I can see, but they aren’t saved to and loaded from the config files yet. Joystick bindings are a bit harder and I’m working on them, but still, it’s a lot of progress! This was one of the tasks I was dreading the most in the entire game, since I wasn’t sure I would be able to pull it off. Apparently I can?, but it will need to be thoroughly tested in many systems. I don’t trust it :P Inputs are tricky.
The config menu is done! You can change from windowed to fullscreen mode and viceversa (this can also be achieved by pressing F11), set the screen size to x1, x2, x3, x4, x5 and x6, turn “tutorial mode” on and off (yes, there will be a tutorial mode!), change the volume of sound effects and music and set the size of screenshot captures. All settings are saved to an external config file. You can also access the custom keybindings menu from here.
I’ve added the option to display speech bubbles on top of characters! Cute, right?
Known bugs to fix
- The indoor map system is broken. May need to rework it from scratch…
- You might be stuck in the intro screen if you spend too much time in the config menu. Should be an easy fix.
What I want to do next
Right now I want to finish custom keybindings. Then I’ll probably move on to either implementing a simple save system, or fixing/remaking the indoor map system.
That’s all, folks! Thank you for reading, and again, sorry for not posting for such a long time. I can’t promise that I’ll stick to a schedule, so, if you want to know how the game is going, you can always have a look at the game’s repo. I try to keep it up to date.
Best of luck,
